On Sunday the 10th of September Martin was lucky enough to be invited to the North East Strongest Man competition. The competitors here are of a different level than Martin has previously been competing against as many of them have competed in UK Strongest man.

In a performance far surpassing the practical failure that was Northwich, Martin actually ended up ranking 5th out of 11 competitors, beaten by just 1.5 points from 4th place, and by just 2.5 points from 3rd. Even though Martin didn't podium rank, he was awarded the Warrior of the Day trophy, which is a great confidence boost to be acknowledged as a competitor amongst such strong competition.

The events were as follows:

  • Truck Pull
  • Log Press
  • Flip and Carry
  • Axe Hold
  • Cross Walk

Conans Wheel

Showing off a bit more with CAD, Ive put together these plans for a Conans Wheel:

The Conans Wheel

This piece of kit is going to be very difficult to manufacture because its very complex. Theres an axle running through the main support column and the lifting height is adjustible too. One of the biggest problems with these machines is that tall people gain a massive advantage over everyone else because they have a lower lift and can hold the weight lower down their body, making it easier to balance. Short people often find that they practically need to walk on tiptoes to get it around without it hitting the floor. Making the lift height adjustible will nullify this and make this apparatus completely fair.

Northwich Festival Strongman Event

Martin took part in the Northwich Festival Strongman Event sponsored by Northwich Rugby club. There was a large turnout of strength athletes, 17 in all, and this is probably because of the £500 prize fund for the winner.

Martin ranked joint seventh overall in a fairly poor performance. He made too many mistakes on the super yoke and even failed the 100 kilo log, something with which he practices regularly at the gym. However, he did come first in two events - the car lift and the truck pull, breaking competition records in both. The competition was excellent and it was a really great day out. A full report is being drafted by the event organizers, so when its ready we will have a copy here with a brief commentary on it.

We also have videos of Martin in the events; these are also being uploaded, so watch this space.

Martin is also taking part in the North East Strongest Man competition this Sunday, organized by Bob Daglish. The gym will be closed on Sunday due to this.

Car Lift Frame

I just finished drawing up the plans for Martins car lifting frame. Its adjustible! After this is made, Martin will only need a set of stones and a conans wheel manufacturerd to have a complete set of "core" strongman events to practice with.
